Roaches

Cockroaches love your home for the same reasons you do: food, water, and shelter. Even the cleanest homes can harbor them, and they're capable of spreading bacteria across your surfaces. Turkestan cockroaches are increasingly common outdoors around SLO County foundations and yard debris, while German cockroaches are the ones that take over kitchens and restaurants. German roaches double their population roughly every 11 days, so by the time you spot one, the infestation is almost always bigger than it looks.

Ants

Argentine ants are the dominant ant species across San Luis Obispo County, and they're a unique challenge. Unlike most ants, Argentine ant colonies are interconnected, so killing the foragers you see in your kitchen barely makes a dent. Effective control means targeting the colony itself. Other species common in our area include Pharaoh ants, pavement ants, and carpenter ants. They track bacteria into your home, damage moist wood around your structure, and help themselves to pet food, crumbs, and any standing water they can find.

Spiders

Black widow spiders are the primary venomous spider species here on the Central Coast. You'll find them in garages, woodpiles, meter boxes, and under outdoor furniture. Brown recluse spiders are not established in SLO County, though they're occasionally transported in on shipped goods. Most spiders you'll encounter are harmless house spiders and web builders, but regular de-webbing and perimeter treatment go a long way toward reducing populations and keeping the venomous ones from getting comfortable around your home.

Mosquitoes

Spending time outdoors in SLO County means dealing with mosquitoes, especially near any source of standing water. These aren't just an annoyance. California has recorded over 300 deaths from West Nile Virus since 2003, including confirmed cases right here in San Luis Obispo County. Mosquitoes can also transmit parasites and diseases to dogs and horses. Eliminating standing water around your property, such as old plant saucers, clogged gutters, and forgotten buckets, is one of the most effective steps you can take.

Rodents

Mice and rats can chew through wiring (creating fire hazards), nest in your crawl spaces, get into your trash, and leave contaminated droppings on surfaces throughout your home. They also behave very differently from each other. Mice are curious and quick to investigate new things, while rats are cautious and suspicious of changes in their environment.
